Scholarship Description
The Tanzanian-German Centre for Postgraduate Studies in Law (TGCL) has been established at the University of Dar es Salaam School of Law (Formerly Faculty of Law) in cooperation with the University of Bayreuth (Germany). Its programmes are funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Foreign Office.
The TGCL offers aspiring lawyers and law students from the Partner States of the East African Community a structured LLM and PhD study programme with the goal of qualifying them for leading positions in the region.
TGCL is one of five centres established in Africa under the name “African Excellence – Fachzentren zur Eliteförderung”, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Foreign Office within the programme “Aktion Afrika”.

Eligibility
To be eligible:

  • Applicants must be candidates from the East African Community (EAC) Partner States (i.e. Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda)
  • The requirements for admission to the LLM and PhD programmes are
    • for the LLM programme a Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or its equivalent from a recognised institution of higher legal education, and
    • for the PhD programme an excellent LLM degree from a recognised institution.

Participating Institutions
The TGCL postgraduate study programmes are conducted at the University of Dar es Sa-laam School of Law (Formerly Faculty of Law), in close cooperation with the Institute of African Studies and the Faculty of Law, Business Administration and Economics, University of Bayreuth.

Fields of study
The LLM candidates will pursue a programme consisting of coursework and a dissertation with an East African regional and comparative perspective. In particular, students are expected to attend and pass courses relating to East African Community Law, Human Rights Law and Constitutional Law.

The LLM dissertation should focus on EAC law in relation to the student’s own national law, particularly (but not exclusively) in thematic fields related to the areas of cooperation under the EAC Treaty.

PhD candidates in their theses should compare two or more national laws, which deal with thematic fields related to the areas of cooperation under the EAC Treaty. They will also attend the above-mentioned courses as far as they are relevant for their research projects.

To both LLM and PhD students seminars and workshops on research methodology and professional leadership skills will be offered, accompanied by an introduction to German Law and the Law of the European Union, and a German language course. Some of these will be offered at a summer school at the University of Bayreuth, Germany

The LLM scholarship covers a period of one year, and the PhD scholarship a period of three years

Scholarship benefits
The scholarships cover university fees, the cost of living (including miscellaneous charges) of 2,400/3,000 EUR per annum for Tanzanians/Non-Tanzanians and the cost of research up to a total of 500/3,000 EUR for LLM/PhD students. The application must contain the following documents:
  1. A completed TGCL application form [PhD, LLM]
  2. A completed University of Dar es Salaam application form
  3. The following attachments:
    1. a letter of motivation
    2. a curriculum vitae with clear evidence of periods of legal and other relevant training and practical experience
    3. photocopies of all relevant certificates (birth certificate, school leaving certificates, certificates of legal or other professional education, including provisional results for applicants who are in the final year of their LLB studies); in the case of documents not in English an official translation should be attached
    4. three letters of recommendation (signed and sealed)
    5. three passport-size photographs
    6. a release letter from the employer (if employed)
  4. A proposal of the intended research
    1. in the case of LLM candidates: 5 pages
    2. in the case of PhD candidates: 15 pages

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Candidates shortlisted for admission and scholarship will be informed and requested to be available for an interview. Unsuccessful candidates will be notified via email.

Maastricht University High Potential Scholarships for International graduate students

Scholarship Description
Maastricht University aims to further strengthen its position as a leading European university offering high-quality education with an international orientation. To this end, the university implements a pro-active recruitment policy for international students, in particular for the Master’s programmes. Scholarships are made available by the Maastricht University Scholarship Fund in order to encourage talented students from outside the EU/EEA to follow a Master’s programme at Maastricht University. One of these scholarships is the Maastricht University High Potential scholarship.

Eligibility
Applicants must be admissible for a master’s programme or graduate programme for professionals at Maastricht University and must not be older than 35 years at the start of the academic year (1 September 2012). You may apply simultaneously for a master's programme and this scholarship.

Scholarship applicants must have obtained excellent results in their previous studies. This must be shown in the application file by including, for example, grade lists or reference letters. In case of equivalent qualification, preference will be given to applications, which show that the applicant is among the top 5%.

Applicants must come from a country outside the EU/EEA and meet the requirements for obtaining an entry visa and residence permit for the Netherlands.

Selection criteria: For the scholarship assessment, the Scholarship Committee takes all elements of the application into account, including the level of previous study programmes, academic excellence, motivation, status of the home institution, the connection with the prior study programme, future career plans and references.

Scholarship duration
