FG to Award 1087 Scholarships to Nigerian Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students

News: FG to Award 1087 Scholarships to Nigerian Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students

The Minister of Education Dr Sam Egwu has been reported to have said in Abuja that 1,087 scholarships would be awarded by the Federal Government to deserving undergraduate and postgraduate students in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the length and breadth of Nigeria.

Dr Egwu stated this when he flagged-off the 2009 Selection Interviews for Federal Government Scholarship Awards to students in Tertiary Institutions involved in the scheme. The scheme is to begin to run as from the 2009/2010 academic session.

According to him, the scholarship scheme will offer more students access to higher education, improve their welfare on campus and reduce their involvement in anti-social activities.

Also, the Federal Government is said to be planning to implement the scheme as an annual exercise to encourage deserving students.

This would indeed resurrect a scheme that died between 2003 and 2008 “due to non-budgetary provisions” quoting the minister. The resuscitation process is set to commence with 1087 scholarship students for the 2009/2010 academic session.

We commend the FG on this laudable project, but hope that the insincerity and indecisions that have characterized such outings in the past have all been taken care of. 1087 Nigerian students on FG scholarships annually is only fair and well deserved to the Nigerian student.
